In taking care of El Toro, we should pay attention to the mowing, fertilization, irrigation, and also weed and insect controls. El Toro does not need to be mowed very often. The best way to mow is by grasscycling – let the grass clippings stay on the lawn. Glass clippings can be used as fertilizer and cover 25 percent of the fertilizer needs.

In spring season, we'd better use a turf-grade high-nitrogen fertilizer containing a weed preventative such as Barricade. In mid-summer, nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (N-P-K) turf-grade fertilizer is the best. In early to mid fall, the best choice will be Feed/Winterizer containing a weed preventative. This type of grass needs approximately 1 to 1 1/4 inches of water per week, and more frequent watering in sandy soils. Never water the grass at night because it may attract fungal development. Area covered by shade will need less water than the one exposed to the sun. In winter you can water the plant once or twice a week; while in summer you can water it three or more times per week.

The best time to water El Toro is early to late morning. In order to prevent from the spring weeds such as crabgrass, you can give a granular pre emergence herbicide such as Team 2G in early until middle of February. You can use the herbicides only when you see the presence of weeds. You must also make sure, and wait for three weeks after the lawn is green. There aren't many problems with insects for this genus. Sometimes we find spittle bug infestation, and it is very rare. Spittle bugs are small, triangular-shape black in color with bright red stripes on their wings. The size of the bugs is around ¼ inch.
